42-Year-Old Birmingham Rehabilitation Hospital to be Upgraded

  January 29, 2016

HealthSouth Corporation in Birmingham, Ala., will start work in early 2016 to expand and renovate Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital. Nashville's Gresham, Smith and Partners will provide architectural and interior design services on the project, which is expected to finish in early 2019.

The first phase will build a two-story, 20,220-square-foot addition to the existing building, which will house new private patient rooms, a nurse station, a dayroom, and new entry lobby. The project will convert 64 of Lakeshore’s 100 patient beds to private rooms, up from 20 private beds and 80 semiprivate beds in the existing layout.

In phase two, 51,100 square feet of existing space will be renovated to convert shared rooms into private rooms. The hospital will also be updated with new interior finishes.
