The American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) have distributed the first of a series of DVDs to help their members build and renovate safe and efficient health care facilities.

This New Hospital, a 30-minute video filmed at St. John’s Medical Center in St. Louis, takes hospital managers and workers through all phases of a construction project, from planning to occupancy. It details the impact renovation and construction has on hospital patients, visitors and staff.

This New Hospital is the first product from ASHE’s health care construction television series. The DVD aims to give viewers insights into what they can expect during the planning, design and construction process and how their input is needed to keep construction projects under budget and on time, says Dale Woodin, ASHE executive director.

“Hospital construction and renovation is a complex and costly process with potential risks to workers and patients if not planned and managed well,” Woodin says. The DVD “provides facility managers, nurses, physicians, infection control professionals, administrators and all hospital workers a clear understanding of the process, thus leading to better projects and better healing environments.”
