Will Remote-Control Mowing Catch On?

I have not heard much about remote-control mowing catching on yet at institutional and commercial facilities across the country. But it does seem like an inevitable next step as grounds managers strive for sustainability and alternative fuel sources to gasoline.

It appears San Francisco is making the leap. An online article for San Francisco Magazine discussed the city’s Recreation and Parks Department’s purchase of two remote-control mowers for $100,000 to mow slopes deemed too dangerous for human beings to navigate.

The supplier of the mowers said San Francisco has been the only city to jump in on his idea, though surrounding areas inquired about the machines.

While the mowers are costly, they require far less labor than a regular mowing crew needs — always a factor in today's budget atmosphere.

Any thoughts? Is this a thing for the future?
