The green movement affects institutional and commercial facilities in different ways, some obvious and some not so obvious. For Salt Lake (Utah) Community College, one influence of the green movement has been evident in the way its grounds operations purchase utility vehicles.
"The green element is a big deal for us," says Bob Askerlund, the college's assistant vice president of facilities services. "We have a major sustainability movement on our campuses, and our students are very involved. Being green really impacts our choices. We do look at cost (of utility vehicles) to make sure we're within reason, but it's been kind of an evolutionary process. We've moved to electric chargeable vehicles for green purposes, as well."
The green benefits of electric utility vehicles are prompting many grounds operations to rethink their equipment-buying decisions, but for many managers, the ultimate purchasing decision will have to take into account a range of factors that go beyond green issues.
