A new White House initiative targets five key areas it plans to focus on to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Net-Zero Game Changers Initiative is a group of 17 federal agencies led by President Biden’s climate advisers. The key areas that the administration will focus on are: power grids, aviation, fusion energy, efficient buildings and net-zero fuels and industrial products.
By focusing on those five areas, according to an article on E&E News, the administration hopes to generate climate jobs while improving the environment and the country’s energy security.
Inside those areas, the administration identified 37 “game-changing” technologies to focus on that to help achieve net-zero goals: nuclear, solar and geothermal power generation; advanced battery use, electric aircraft and high-speed rail; low-carbon forms of aluminum, chemicals and concretes; and reducing emissions from livestock and agriculture.
As part of this plan, the administration announced that $1.5 billion of Inflation Reduction Act funds will focus on building and upgrading facilities at national laboratories, addressing programs such as basic energy science, fusion energy and advanced computing, the article said.
