If You Have a BAS, You’re Half Way to Internet of Things

  December 2, 2015

If you’re still avoiding the building Internet of Things, perhaps our October cover story package can help you make some sense of this hugely important concept for all buildings, but especially high-performance buildings.

There are several major takeways from the package, but let’s highlight two big ones here. First, as Dev DuRuz, a consultant with Paladino and Co. says, “If you have a BAS, you’re halfway there.” That’s to say, many of the tools for deploying a building IoT strategy are already in place in many facilities.

Secondly, and probably most importantly, the advantages of IoT can be huge — from better occupant feedback to dramatic energy savings. What’s more, as senior editor Naomi Millan writes, “The Building IoT has one capability that all facility managers need and none has: the ability to be everywhere at once.” What she means is that the building IoT moves a lot of building analytics to the cloud and creates a level of intelligence in building analytics not seen before, allowing facility executives to control and manage buildings both to a degree of specificity not possible before, but also from anywhere. This is especially attractive, no doubt, to FMs with a large campus of buildings, or buildings in several states. Or even FMs who like to take an occasional vacation!

Whatever your level of introduction to the Building IoT, just know this is an idea you’ll be hearing much more about in the coming months. And I don’t mean just in the trade media. It might not be long before a curious C-suiter returns from a conference and immediately wants to know what you’re doing with IoT.
