Earth Day has been celebrated across the country and eventually the world every April 22 since 1970.
The day was designated with the idea of making the world a better place so that generations upon generations can live in a world that’s healthy environmentally for the planet’s inhabitants.
As many facilities celebrate Earth Day with some kind of activity that benefits the environment, here are some stories published on FacilitiesNet over the last few years that have placed an emphasis on reducing energy consumption and improving sustainability practices.
As many facility managers know, the effects of climate change are starting to show signs of a planet that needs the help of everyone to reverse the signs of climate change that are everywhere, like rising temperatures, more violent storms and changing weather patterns.
Facility managers in institutional and commercial facilities are being tasked with doing their part to help the planet, since it’s commonly accepted that commercial buildings are responsible for about 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.
Concepts such as decarbonization and net-zero buildings are new-generation ways of thinking that facility managers are basing future projects on. Some of them are mandated by new governmental standards, some are due to the simple math of looking at the return of investment from upgrading to new technologies, and still others are looking to be more sustainable with their practices merely to be a good partner in the community.
