Transit agencies and state and local governments will receive $1.7 billion in grant money from the U.S. Department of Transportation to purchase low and zero-emission buses as part of funding from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law, the Associated Press reported.
Projects in 46 states and U.S. territories will benefit from the grants. More than 1,700 U.S. built buses, nearly half which will have zero carbon emissions will be purchased by transit agencies and state and local governments as part of the Biden Administration’s priority to emphasize electric vehicles at the school and public transit levels.
The funding is the second round of grants for electric buses and the infrastructure to support them. The U.S. has already invested $3.3 billion in electric buses and plans to award an additional $5 billion over the next three years.
Officials received 475 project proposals for the grant money. Among the proposals accepted include:
- Seattle received $33.5 million for 30 electric buses and chargers.
- Washington, D.C., received $104 million for a garage and 100 electric battery buses.
- Smaller institutions like Iowa City, Iowa, and the Seneca Nation in Western New York also received money.
