Kansas City Airport Earns LEED v4 Gold Certification
Facility becomes first airport in Midwest to achieve recognition. March 9, 2023

A new airport terminal at the Kansas City Airport earned LEED v4 Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The terminal is the first in the Midwest and only second in the country to receive the designation, according to Greenability Magazine. The terminal achieved sustainability benchmarks for energy efficiency, water conservation, material selection and waste reduction.
Some of the projects that the airport took on that contributed to the designation include:
- Installed wireless electric bus charging pads – the first U.S. airport to install them. Buses can park over the pads and charge while passengers load and unload.
- Added LED lighting and controls, high-efficiency HVAC equipment, smart building controls and expanded windows to use more natural lighting.
- Designed to generate 100 percent renewable energy with onsite solar panels.
- Recycled more than 98 percent of the demolished materials from the former terminal and parking garage.
- Upgraded the irrigation system to decrease water consumption by half and planted more native and drought-talented plants.
- Switched out bathroom and kitchen fixtures to save 30 percent on water consumption.
