Architect Proposes New Green Notre Dame Cathedral

Following the devastating fire at Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, Paris architecture firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures has proposed a stunning reboot of the centuries old cathedral, complete with modern sustainability measures.

The new cathedral would include glass, carbon fiber, and oak roof which connects to the iconic spire “in one single curved stroke of a pencil,” according to CNN. The roof will also include a rooftop garden to grow fruit and vegetables, which will be run by charities and volunteers.

The design proposal also includes methods for the building to produce its own electricity, including an “organic active layer” within the roof glass that will produce solar power.

Addressing concerns from traditionalists about the radical changes to the cathedral, Vince Callebaut Architectures said in their release proposing their design: “From primitive Gothic in the 12th century to its restoration by Viollet-le Duc in the 19th century, through the radiant Gothic of the 13th century and the flamboyant Gothic of the 14th century, Notre-Dame cathedral undoubtedly arises from centuries of work and multi-faceted inspiration. As such, it is hardy encumbered by useless musings about the overlapping styles inherent in the building."
