What You Need To Know About the Various LEED Credentials

Today's tip is about the various credentials the Green Building Certification Institute offers for industry professionals with various levels of LEED knowledge.
The first is the LEED Green Associate, which denotes a basic knowledge of the principles and practices of LEED. To become a LEED Green Associate, a candidate must have documented involvement in a LEED project, be employed in a sustainable work field (and have proof), or complete an education program that addresses green building principles. Application fee for LEED Green Associate is $50, and the exam fee is $150 for USGBC members, $200 for non-members. LEED Green Associate requires 15 continuing education hours every two years to maintain the credential. There is a $50 renewal fee every two years, as well.
The LEED Accredited Professional is, of course, the most widely known credential. LEED APs must have documented involvement on a LEED project and must agree to the Disciplinary & Exams Appeals Policy, credential maintenance of 30 hours every two years, and submit to an application audit. The application fee for the LEED AP is $100 and $300 for the exam fee for a specialty or $150 for non-specialty. Candidates can choose specialties in Building Design & Construction, Interior Design & Construction, Operations & Maintenance, Homes, or Neighborhood Development. There's also a $50 fee to renew every two years.
Finally, the LEED Fellow credential designates industry professionals who have made significant contributions to the field of green building and sustainability. A LEED Fellow must have been a LEED AP for eight years, must have 10 years experience in the green building field and must submit an extensive application package through the LEED Fellow online portal. LEED Fellows will be evaluated in and must meet criteria in four of five categories: Technical Proficiency (this one is required), Education and Mentoring, Leadership, Commitment and Service and Advocacy. An application fee of $225 is required.
