A new executive order requires federal agencies to reduce greenhouse gases by 3 percent a year, or 30 percent by the end of fiscal year 2015.

To comply with the order, agencies must ensure that at least one-half of renewable energy comes from new renewable sources. Agencies also must reduce their water use by 2 percent annually through fiscal year 2015.

The order also requires agencies to ensure new construction and major renovation projects comply with the 2006 Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings Memorandum of Understanding.

For specific implementation guidance related to the order, visit the Federal Energy Management Program web site.
