2008 Certified Green Product Directory
Despite the best efforts of marketers, in all reality, building products don’t really fall into the comfortable categories of “green” or “non-green.” Talking about a product’s “environmental friendliness” (another copywriter’s favorite) is a bit more multifaceted than that. So that’s where third-party green certifications fit in. These certifications are based on a product’s ability to meet open, transparent and science-based standards. Facility executives can use these certifications to identify building products verified to meet particular environmental criteria — whether recycled content, VOC emissions, low embodied energy, or several of these criteria combined into a more holistic environmental standard.
The editors of Building Operating Management magazine welcome you to our annual Certified Green Product Directory — a collection of the most recognizable and trusted independent third-party certifications, and the manufacturers (with URLs) that have had products certified by them.
This year, the third for the directory, we welcome the WaterSense label to our list. As these certifications grow — both the credible ones and the ones that are marketing gimmicks — it will be more important then ever for facility executives to consult trusted sources of information to identify which certifications to use as a criterion for product selection. We hope our directory will be that resource.

A multi-attribute certification, EcoLogo certifies products in more than 20 building- and construction-related categories. Criteria include: aggressive rates of recycled content, reductions in a variety of undesirable chemicals, and the promotion of products that conserve resources. Products must also meet or exceed accepted industry performance and durability standards.

The deadline for companies to file their 2008 paperwork was March 31, 2008. Companies that hadn’t submitted paperwork by the deadline were put on probation and removed from the list. However, those companies could have been added back to the list if they submitted their paperwork by May 30, 2008. The list published here is current as of May 9, 2008. The organization also certifies products at a more stringent emissions standard for use in schools, and has recently started a mold risk reduction program that certifies the design, construction and ongoing operations of facilities. |
