Housing areas at three United States Army bases are receiving upgrades and energy saving enhancements as part of a capital improvements project.

An energy saving performance contract worth more than $200 million will provide capital improvements to the housing areas at military bases in Fort Bragg, Fort Mead and Fort Sill.

The upgrades are focused on quality-of-life improvements and energy efficiency upgrades for service members and their families. The agreement covers 5,000 homes and more than 15,000 residents.

Ameresco and CRC Innovations, the companies who entered the agreement with the military, project the energy upgrades will reduce electric consumption by 40 percent and natural gas consumption by 50 percent.

The energy saving projects include replacing existing HVAC units with sustainable, renewable energy-sourced systems using ground source heat pumps as well as new electricity panels and new meters.

The projects are expected to provide more than $12.4 million in annual utility and operational cost savings. Other benefits include improved heating and cooling, resiliency during extreme weather and reduced safety hazards.
