In December 2016, after a nearly decade-long process, the House of Representatives appropriated a first allocation of $834 million to build a new $2.11 billion, 2.1-million-square-foot FBI headquarters building. The new facility will replace the 40-year-old J. Edgar Hoover building, which is expected to be demolished or converted to a mixed-use development.
The new FBI headquarters is to be built on one of three possible suburban Washington, D.C., sites (Greenbelt or Landover, Md., or Springfield, Va.). The new facility will consolidate several buildings around D.C. into one campus, and reduce the FBI’s footprint from 3 million square foot to 2.1 million.
GSA expects to award the contract to develop, design, and build the new facility by March 2017.
