Preparing for the Next Pandemic

Credible information, cleaning protocols and proper training will allow facility departments to successfully navigate the next health threat

People often think that COVID-19 was the first pandemic in modern history, but the facility and janitorial industries have had to deal several other emerging pathogens and infection concerns over the past 30 years including Ebola, H1N1, MDROs, HIV/AIDS and Candida auris.

In this presentation from Clean Buildings Expo, co-located with NFMT Baltimore, Scott Hedding, vice president of environmental services for MedStar Health, shares his personal account of his journey through pandemics and outbreaks, highlighting key lessons learned and strategies employed.

In 1995, a pivotal moment occurred when a colleague confided about his AIDS diagnosis. This marked an initiation into dealing with pandemics professionally. Despite the fear surrounding HIV/AIDS in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hedding emphasized the importance of informed decision-making and dispelling unnecessary panic by thoroughly understanding regulations and protocols.

Reflecting on his experiences during the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, Hedding underscores the importance of well-trained staff and efficient communication channels.

Transitioning to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hedding discusses the challenges and successes in adapting to evolving guidance. Relying on trusted, credible sources of information such as the CDC or EPA is critical during these times. Misinformation, particularly on social media platforms, is easily spreadable and can deter effective pandemic response.

Throughout his presentation, Hedding emphasizes the necessity of adaptability and proactive measures in confronting pandemics. He outlines the importance of maintaining rigorous cleaning protocols, even amidst shifting guidance, and stressed the significance of proper training and adherence to safety protocols.
