The facility management profession must change to survive in the age of information and automation. The facility management professional must become an information worker (IW). The facility manager must increase their responsibility and decrease their workload and liability.
An IW will decrease the need for experience and education, but have a tremendous impact on the organization C-Suite by creating dominant value. The mechanism behind the transformation is to identify and utilize expertise of the expert vendors, outsource the project management to the expert vendors. FMs will use information as their core expertise.
In this video, Kashiwagi reviews three recent tests as examples which have shown a dramatic decrease in cost of facility management services, but an increase in performance and value. The result of the facility management transformation has resulted in the minimization of decision making, reduction of costs, and an increase in organizational capability.
The “FM of the Future” is a different paradigm from the traditional facility manager. It is leadership instead of management. It affects the entire supply chain by bringing efficiency, simplicity and transparency to an organization. Facility managers must learn the new paradigm, vocabulary and actions to adapt to the future.
