City of Spearfish, S.D.

Overview

Although LED lighting was available to retrofit the lighting at Spearfish City Hall, the up-front cost was too high for awhile. However, when the price of LED bulbs dropped the opportunity to retrofit to LED with a ROI of 1.5 years or less made the project fit within the city of Spearfish budget. We chose to start the retrofit project where the lights are on the longest which of course is our city hall.

The biggest challenge: While working on the project, we discovered that the tombstones/sockets we purchased were not the same in all fixtures. As renovations occurred throughout the building since its opening in 1995, different light fixtures were purchased and of course the tombstones/sockets were different. This resulted in more costs incurred but luckily the tombstones were the most inexpensive parts used in the project, but it did slow down the project while we waited for parts to arrive.

The achievement: In the first quarter of 2016 before the retrofit took place, the city hall electricity bill was $23,695.08. After the retrofit was completely done, the first quarter city hall electricity bill was $11,483.41 for a savings of $12,211.67 for a 51.5 percent savings per quarter.
