What to Put in a Flooring Specification

By Lewis Migliore

This article is an update of one published in September 2012.  A lot has changed in the industry since 2012 with regard to what is and what is not understood about flooring materials and substrate conditions. It's no surprise that there's a growing interest from facility managers in having their flooring specifications reviewed and updated, even in having complete specifications written, from the concrete to the flooring, and everything in between. Many of these specifications have outdated information, are poorly researched, and are irrelevant to many of the concerns that should be addressed. Worse yet, some specifications will actually compromise the success of the flooring project. Unfortunately, it seems, not enough thought is given to the downside risks of a project or to the guidelines and pertinent information that should be contained in a specification.
