A small school district in Northern Wisconsin has extended closure to April 2 after nearly 40 people received medical care due to a mechanical issue in the school building’s furnace system.

On March 14, the Crandon School District announced that 39 people were treated due to the furnace issue. Two of the people who received medical care were diagnosed with elevated levels of carbon monoxide inside the school.

According to WSAW, the school district contacted an HVAC vendor to inspect the furnace and all the furnaces in the district. After planning to close the school only through the end of the week to March 15, officials extended it into April after deeming further testing was necessary to address the concerns, according to WJFW

In a press release to the community, the school district said it chose to extend the closure to rule out any potential mechanical issues and undergo a comprehensive cleaning of the facility.

“The process will involve thorough inspection, cleaning and maintenance of all HVAC components to ensure optimal performance and eliminate any potential sources of contamination or hazard,” the release read.

The closure coincides with the school’s scheduled spring break.
