Making the workplace attractive to employees is one of facility managers’ highest priorities these days. Hybrid work is the norm now, and the pandemic showed how productivity can remain high with remote work, or a combination of remote and in person.

So how do facility managers evolve the workplace to make it a space employees actually want to come to in the morning? A recent report by sustainability consulting firm Stok titled “High Performance Buildings and the Evolution of the Workplace” identified the top five priorities for employees in an evolving high-performance workplace.

The five top priorities workers said they wanted from a high-performance workplace are:

  • Access to daylight
  • Increased flexibility in work hours
  • Connections to nature
  • Physical health programs
  • Hybrid work policy

What’s interesting about these results is that the results are a combination of policy (Nos 2 and 5), physical attributes of a high-performance building (Nos 1 and 3), and workplace perks (No. 4).

What the five all have in common, however, is that they show the value employees are placing on a workplace and organizational culture that prizes their health and wellness. Workplace flexibility, a high-performance building, and onsite perks that promote health and well-being are all aspects of an organization-wide health and wellness strategy. Facility managers should take note: This is what their occupants want.
