With the COVID-19 pandemic firmly behind us, facility managers are adjusting to the promised "new normal." However, the challenges of today aren't all that different from the pre-pandemic world.  

Environmental issues have been a top priority for facility managers for decades. Green, sustainability, ESG, the buzzwords may have changed but the meaning is the same. Buildings contribute 40 percent of global carbon emissions. However, the actions of facility managers can make a significant difference. With a goal of achieving net zero energy by 2050, the environment remains a critical challenge for the industry.  

With the rise in school shootings and violent incidents in healthcare facilities, safety remains another top priority for facility managers. However, occupants also prioritize convenience, so access control measures can't be too obtrusive. It's definitely a challenge for facility departments to balance. In addition, occupant safety extends beyond security to also include fire and life safety and indoor air quality measures.   

It doesn't matter what problem facility managers are trying to solve in their building if there is no one around to fix it. The "Great Resignation" that followed the pandemic led to an early exit of millions of workers across all industries. Now in a tight labor market with employees desiring to work remotely, facility managers are struggling to find qualified candidates for an in-person industry.
