“This is an industry where hard work, meticulous planning and dedication often goes unnoticed,” Cary Wilder, associate director of projects and renewal strategies, Stanford Graduate School of Business says. “Facility management is a role where success is often measured by the absence of issues or complaints from building occupants – a sign that everything is functioning as it should. However, it is also a role that can be thankless, with the effort behind the scenes seldom acknowledged.”
Wilder was one of eight facility professionals to be named to FacilitiesNet’s third annual Facility Champion award. The Champions play a critical role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of buildings across the country, all while exhibiting strong leadership and pride within the industry.
“This makes being named a Facility Champion all the more significant, as it highlights the critical work that keeps facilities running smoothly and effectively,” Wilder says.
Wilder has had an extensive career in facilities, ranging from R&D industrial buildings, Class A office spaces, retail shopping centers and now Stanford University. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to enhancing facility operations. Her proactive approach to maintaining open communication channels and addressing tenant concerns has fostered long-term relationships and high tenant satisfaction. Wilder’s ability to build strong partnerships has significantly reduced response times for repairs and maintenance, with vendors completing projects on time and within budget. She has spearheaded a preventative maintenance program revitalization, which led to reduced equipment downtime and improved operational efficiency, ensuring more reliable operations across the facility.
“I’m proud of every project that I’m a part of,” Wilder says. “Each project, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and efficiency of our facilities.”
Wilder has also led the charge in multiple sustainable initiatives, including the implementation of energy efficient systems and waste reduction programs, allowing for more sustainable and cost-effective operations.
“With an increased emphasis on sustainability, it’s important to incorporate green practices into facility operations,” Wilder says. “I’m learning more about energy management, waste reduction and sustainable building practices.”
With a successful career in the industry, Wilder still manages to spend time giving back to new and emerging facility management professionals. She has organized and led numerous training sessions focused on best practices, technological innovations and sustainable management. She advises new FMs to be proactive, build a strong network and to be resilient and patient.
“Facility management is often about preventing problems before they occur,” she says. “The role of a facility manager can be demanding. Patience, resilience and a positive attitude are key traits that will help you navigate the challenges and allow you to continue to excel in your career without burnout.”
