Roof Restoration Takes Cool Route

The roof over the 210,000-square-foot Cummins Corporate Office Building worldwide headquarters in Columbus, Ind., underwent annual moisture scans and other repairs to keep the aging, single-ply EPDM membrane functioning. After years of maintaining the roof, however, the company decided to undertake a roof restoration project.



The roof over the 210,000-square-foot Cummins Corporate Office Building worldwide headquarters in Columbus, Ind., underwent annual moisture scans and other repairs to keep the aging, single-ply EPDM membrane functioning. After years of maintaining the roof, however, the company decided to undertake a roof restoration project.

Cummins sought two things: a quality, long-term asset protection solution, and an economically and environmentally sound cool roofing solution that would not detract from the building’s aesthetic.

Cummins partnered with The Garland Company to conduct a comprehensive lab analysis of the facility’s roofing system to determine its status. Core samples from the roof showed the membrane was in restorable condition and worth preserving.

Knowing that, Cummins decided on the White-Knight multipurpose high-build urethane waterproofing system to provide an additional 32 mils of watertight protection that will effectively extend the life of the roof 12 years or more.

In addition, the system’s high-build urethane formulation offers excellent adhesion to the existing rubber membrane. The system also carries an Energy Star label, meaning it has a reflective surface that reduces heat gain inside the building and helps control cooling costs.
