In March and April 2015, Building Operating Management conducted an email survey of facility managers on the subject of facility department training budgets. Responses totaled 915. Some charts may not add to 100 percent because of rounding. The following budget and planning information for facility department training is drawn from that survey. The survey reports increases and decreases in budgets for facility education and training; the amount budgeted per employee for managers and supervisors and for maintenance and engineering employees; goals for facility staff education and training; sources of training; benefits of facility staff education and training; and needs for facility staff education and training. Specific questions include the following: • Did your overall education and training budget (including any funds in other lines for auxiliary costs) increase or decrease compared to last year? • How much money do you have in this year’s budget for education and training (counting any auxiliary costs, whether or not they are in a separate line item), per maintenance/engineering employee? • How much money do you have in this year’s budget for education and training (counting any auxiliary costs, whether or not they are in a separate line item), per supervisory/management employee? • Does your facility department have a target for the number of hours of education and training (from all sources) each maintenance and engineering employee should receive each year? • What is your department’s target for hours of training each maintenance and engineering employee should receive each year? • Does your facility department have a target for the number of hours of education and training (from all sources) each supervisory/management employee should each year? • What is your department’s target for hours of training each supervisory/management employee should receive each year? • Which of the following benefits has your organization achieved as a result of education and training for the facility staff? • Have you quantified the benefits of education and training in dollars? • In your opinion, do you have enough funds to cover your education and training needs? • Does the lack of education and training have a significant impact on your facility department? • Which of the following is your biggest current training need? • Did your facility department staff receive any facility-related training from an in-house training function in the past year? • Did your facility department staff receive any training from vendors in the past year? • Have you increased the use of online education and training in the past years? • What is the size of your in-house facility staff, counting all levels of the facility management organization and all locations? • What is the primary type of building you are responsible for? • How large is your portfolio?
