The National Facilities Management and Technology conference and expo (NFMT) returns to Las Vegas this November. The 9th edition of NFMT Vegas will be held Nov. 6 and 7 at the Rio Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

This educational event, produced by Building Operating Management, is free to attend. The 2018 show includes 50 new educational sessions divided into six tracks.

· Analytics and Data Management

· Asset and Risk Management

· Business Management

· Energy and Utilities Management

· Operations and Maintenance

· Safety and Security

Facilities professionals can earn up to 14 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) at the free event. In addition, they can see the newest FM technologies from more than 100 vendors in the expo hall.

“We’re very excited about this year’s show,” says Amy Brown, director of education and programming for NFMT Vegas. “We’ve packed it with many new items. One example is the general session, The First (or Next) 100 Days as a Facilities Manager. It’s a brand-new session that explores the sinkholes awaiting new facility managers and an action plan to swerve around them.”

Stormy Friday, one of the most popular presenters at NFMT, is presenting the session.

The agenda for the event is filled with practical sessions offering useful information on vital topics like these:

• “Beyond the KPIs.” This session highlights typical challenges that facility managers and vendors face in developing, implementing, and operationalizing metrics that are needed to achieve the business objective. Presenters: Christa Dodoo and José Febres, International Monetary Fund (IMF).

• “Big Data and Analytics: The Next Frontier for Energy Management.” Explore how the data that exists in building automation systems can be analyzed and prioritized to provide operations staff with applicable solutions through the use of monitoring-based commissioning. The session will examine a variety of data analytics platforms and compare the technologies to identify the different needs they can address. Presenter: Jeff Nichols PE, LEED AP, CEM, Engineering Economics, Inc.

• “The Fatal Flaws in Your Active Shooter Response.” Active shooter incidents quadrupled in 2013-16 versus the previous five-year average. An active shooter incident will unfold at lightning speed in terrifying conditions. The fatal flaw: The current response does not address the lethal first four to eight minutes for employees to respond and the emergency team to take command. Learn how to create plans and procedures and how to train your emergency team and rank-and-file employees. Presenter: Bo Mitchell, 911 Consulting.

• “The 10 Things Your Staff and Vendors Won’t Tell You.” What won’t your staff and vendors tell you willingly about your organization and operation? Things like these: We don’t have a clue how to fix it. You are wasting a lot of money. This repair won’t last till I get to the front door. The presentation will offer ideas on how to bring the truth to light and methods to prevent problems from happening. Presenter: Michael B. Cowley, CPMM, CE Maintenance Solutions.

• “OSHA’s Enforcement and Significant Changes to 2018 NFPA 70E.” This session examines changes made in the 2018 edition of the NFPA 70E and explains how the changes may affect a company’s overall electrical safety program, including key items that need to be addressed for the next three year cycle of an electrical safety program to protect your employees from arc flash/blast and other electrical hazards. Presenter: Doug Tellin, Electrical Safety Specialists, LLC.

• “The Future of FM Professionals in the Information Age.” The “FM of the Future” should speak the language of the C-suite, be leadership based, utilize automation/information systems, and manage/integrate all services that an organization requires under their leadership. This presentation will cover key principles to help attendees make the transformation into FMs of the future. Presenter: Dean Kashiwagi, PhD, P.E., IFMA Fellow, Kashiwagi Solution Model Inc.
