Decoding the Cycle of Facilities Management Innovation and Evolution

The 2024 Facility Champions discuss their careers and the current facilities management climate.

Cary Wilder experiences this phenomenon quite often. And she’s experienced enough to know how to immediately notice a potential problem spot.

“Every time I go to a restaurant, I look up at the ceiling tiles and say, ‘Oh, they’ve got a roof leak,’” says Wilder, the associate director of projects and renewal strategies at Stanford University.

How many facility managers have experienced this same scenario? When walking into another building and eyes begin to wander, and the brain clicks into overtime wondering what that facility manager is dealing with today?

Wilder was one of four participants in our webcast honoring the 2024 Facility Champions. She was joined by Allen Tanner, the maintenance coordinator at Frenship School District in Texas; Doug Diaz, the director of facility optimization at Clark County School District in Las Vegas; and Catherine Antenucci, the assistant director of engineering at Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa.

With facility market associate editor Mackenna Moralez leading the conversation, the group discussed their careers as well as the facility management profession – where it’s headed and where it is now.

This year’s Facility Champions were selected from more than 100 nominees. The program is in its third year. If you’re interested in nominating a deserving individual from your institutional or commercial facility, look for information in the coming months about how you can participate.

Dave Lubach is executive editor of the facility market. He has more than nine years of experience writing about facility management and maintenance issues.
