Children’s Community School in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, opened in 2023 with the goal of reaching net-zero operations. With the installation of energy efficient heat pumps, LED lighting and sensors and solar power, the Montessori school took a significant step toward achieving that accomplishment.

As a Montessori school, Children’s Community School prioritizes an environment where students can learn through hands-on experiences and independent thinking. Because of this, the board of directors, staff, alumni and current families knew that they would want to lean on energy efficiency as much as they could.

The school selected a high efficiency electric heat pump furnace, R-24 wall and R-36 roof insulation. It also uses Energy high solar gain glazed non-metal windows with Argon, Energy Star premium efficiency electric heat pump heater, and Energy Star appliances.

Children’s Community School is equipped with 100 percent LED lighting, 100 percent automatic dimming controlled lighting with sensors, 100 percent exterior lighting with automatic daylight shutoff. The school also has a solar photovoltaic system on the roof.
