New York Soccer Team Seeks to Play in City's First All-Electric Stadium

A Major League Soccer (MLS) team would become the first league franchise and the first team in New York City to play in a fully electric professional sports stadium if a proposed stadium is approved.
The New York City Football Club revealed in a press release plans to build a 25,000-seat stadium in the Willets Point area in Queens. The proposed stadium would be part of an area development project that would also include affordable housing, a public school, 40,000 square feet of public open space, retail space and a hotel.
The soccer club outlined a sustainability plan for the stadium which includes:
- Renewable energy: An array of solar panels installed on the stadium roof and the installation of an emergency backup generator that will only operate during a power outage or when code testing is required.
- Efficient water systems: A water harvesting system below the field will capture rainwater for irrigation. Water systems will include dry urinals, proximity-controlled taps and reduced water mix taps and shower heads.
- Materials: Local materials will be used whenever possible to avoid substantial transportation.
- Public transportation: The franchise will work with the city to ensure public transportation options.
- Waste reduction, reuse and recycling: Initiatives include easy access to drinking water refills and on-site composting.
- Emissions: The franchise seeks to achieve net-zero operations by 2040.
