The Biden administration rejoined the Paris Agreement, agreeing to tackle the climate crisis on the home front. At the time, President Biden submitted a nationally determined contribution with a target of reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 52 percent from the 2005 baseline in 2030.
The United States continues to accelerate the transition to clean energy. Recently, President Biden announced a new target that would aim for the country to reach upwards of a 66 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2035 from 2005 levels. The goal will keep the United States on the path to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2050. In connection with this announcement, the United States is making a formal submission of the latest target to the United Nations Climate Change secretariat as its next NDC under the Paris Agreement.
The United States anticipates, as part of achieving its 2035 NDC emissions target, methane reductions of at least 35 percent from 2005 levels in 2035 as well.
Since the Biden administration announced in 2021 its initial goal of reducing emissions by 52 perfect by 2030, the United States has designed and implemented a climate strategy that leverages emissions reduction and economic growth in every region of the country.
