The push for greener buildings continues to gain traction as some of the major metropolitan areas of the United States keep reducing their facilities’ overall energy use. New York City is just one of the metro areas finding success with its current initiatives.

Large buildings over 25,000 square feet in New York City continue to show decreases in their energy use, according to research from Urban Green Council.

Site energy use decreased among this sector for the fifth year in a row, according to the city’s 2023 water and energy use data for large buildings. Meanwhile, 92 percent of large buildings are estimated to comply with the 2024 carbon limits set by Local Law 97.

The benchmarking data shows:

  • 92 percent of all buildings meet the 2024 Local Law 97 compared to 88 percent a year ago, including 93 percent of office buildings.
  • 43 percent of all buildings meet the 2030 Local Law 97 limits, including 50 percent of office buildings.

The analysis done by Urban Green Council also discovered that site energy use fell 15 percent since 2010, and emissions fell 26 percent among regularly benchmarked properties during the same time. This emissions data is calculated by using benchmarked energy data and emissions rates from New York City’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
