Balancing installation speed, quality and performance of a finished roofing system is an ongoing challenge for many roofing contractors. This challenge becomes even more difficult as building owners request cool-roofing materials that help offset building energy costs.
Carlisle SynTec’s Sure-Weld® TPO features high reflectivity, quick and simple detailing, and consistency and strength with its heat-welded seams. Carlisle’s self-adhering technology (SAT™) TPO membrane is manufactured from the same materials as the company’s standard TPO, with the addition of a factory-applied adhesive on the sheet’s underside. This allows contractors to offer an energy-efficient roofing system that speeds up installations by eliminating mechanical fasteners and adhesives during membrane securement.
A recent installation of Carlisle’s SAT membrane on a building in Georgetown, Texas, put the product to the test. Building owner FTWOODS constructed the facility to accommodate its growing fleet of trucks and equipment. FTWOODS handled the building’s general construction but left the roofing decisions to Texas 5th Wall Inc., a contractor from Austin, Texas.
After 5th Wall installed two layers of insulation and a layer of one-quarter-inch DensDeck® Prime to the steel deck, the company began adhering the SAT membrane. Workers laid the first sheet into place, folded it in half, peeled off the split poly film and set it into place. They repeated the process for the second half of the membrane and rolled the entire sheet with a 100-pound roller, completing the installation of the first sheet.
For the remaining sheets, 5th Wall cut the membranes to length and laid them into place, overlapping the preceding sheet by three inches in order to weld the seam together. Carlisle’s Energy Star®-compliant, Cool Roof Rating Council-certified membranes are manufactured with a 3-inch selvage edge that features no adhesive, allowing for easier welding.
