Las Vegas evokes images of glitz and glamour, where fun happens around the clock. For The Mirage Hotel and Casino and its adjoining 90,000-square-foot Mirage Events Center convention complex, creating the perfect atmosphere is a vital competitive advantage, but it must be done efficiently — an especially key objective in a city increasingly committed to sustainability efforts.
Maintaining the Center's vast lighting systems, most of which are located more than 14 feet above the floor, had been a challenge as lamp changing takes up too much time and interrupts regular visitor foot traffic in the events area. Additionally, inefficiencies and heat generation from 4,000 18- and 42-watt incandescent lamps in the sconces and chandeliers made the energy bill skyrocket.
The solution, which also had to accommodate the fact that The Mirage did not want to replace the fixtures, was found in EnduraLED A19 Dimmable LED A-Shape Lamps. With 7 watts of power and a 25,000-hour rated average life, the lamps provide smooth dimming to 10 percent of full light levels while providing a diffused white light source when accenting a wide area.
The 4,000 LED lamps yielded a host of benefits. According to The Mirage's calculations, the new lamps will last as much as 25 times longer than the previous incandescent lamps. Annually, the A19 lamps are using 68,000 fewer watts per year than the previous system, a savings of approximately $60,000 per year, which also avoids nearly three million pounds of carbon dioxide.
Based on energy savings, payback for replacing the 1,000 42-watt lamps is expected to be less than one year; the replacement of 3,000 18-watt lamps is expected to achieve a similar payback in just less than three years.
Moreover, the company introduced The Mirage to an energy rebate for LED usage provided by its utility company for additional savings.
