Private services offer ways to access utility meter data in near real-time or install and monitor customer-owned (or leased) equipment. Variously called “meter data service providers,” “meter service providers,” or “meter data management agents,” such licensed services may be found through listings with your utility or public utility commission. In exchange for a percent of a demand-response benefit, demand-response providers will manage all metering and data issues for a customer.
The U.S. government offers free PDF documents and software to assist customers with smart meters and the data they produce. A handbook on “Metering Best Practices” may be downloaded here. “Energy Charting and Metrics” is free Excel-based software for analyzing such data.
