The summer season is finally here, but the warm weather often brings a series of extreme weather events. Having the right outdoor power equipment on hand is essential to help combat any potential disruptions brought on by weather events. OPEI suggests the following protocols:
Outdoor power equipment is becoming faster, lighter, more efficient and more technologically advanced. Managers should identify which equipment is needed for their operations. For example, chainsaws can trim limbs and shrubs ahead of a storm and handle clearing. While string trimmers can remove combustible material, making it less vulnerable to wildfires.
In the event of a power outage, a portable generator can power key appliances. Before an event occurs, managers should plan where the generator will be set up and determine how to secure it if needed. In addition, a utility type vehicle can transport people and supplies quickly in the event of an emergency.
Prior to an outage, managers should charge batteries and have the necessary fuel on hand. According to OPEI, gasoline-powered equipment uses E10 or less fuel and most manufacturers recommend adding a fuel stabilizer. Fuel that is older than 30 days may phase separate and cause running problems, so it’s important to purchase fuel just ahead of a storm.
