An emergency response plan is important for any facility manager to establish at institutional and commercial facilities. A plan is especially critical when the facility is responsible for keeping plants and animals alive.
Nico Viola, the director of facilities at the Holden Arboretum & Gardens outside Cleveland, has a unique set up. He manages a facility that includes two biomes housing plants and animals that are climate-reliant on having the proper level of temperatures and humidity levels to thrive. The campus also includes labs with high-level studies taking place. A power outage on campus could eliminate important research, plants and animals that are important to the thriving public gardens, and close down the facility to the public for extended periods.
