In the wake of high profile shootings on college campuses in the last several years, some colleges have bought mass notification systems to alert the campus if there is an emergency.

The key to making a mass notification system work is to make sure that information is delivered as rapidly as possible. Some organizations have complex organizational structures that take time to work through during an emergency.

One expert offers a simple suggestion. Emergency communication should happen within the first 60 seconds of knowing about the situation. Further messages, including specific instructions, should be sent out in another two to five minutes.
