The Disaster Experience — an intensive, hands-on workshop — will once again be offered at the upcoming National Facilities Management & Technology Conference and Expo (NFMT) on Thursday, March 6 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
The three-plus hour exercise puts attendees in the midst of a mock disaster scenario, then asks them to make the critical decisions necessary to manage the damage — and ensure that any disruption is minimized and productivity is maximized.
The Disaster Experience is provided by Attainium Corp., a Gainesville, Va.-based firm that delivers business continuity, emergency preparedness and crisis management services.
“Nearly two hundred facility professionals attended last year’s Disaster Experience at NFMT,” says Wendy Dietzler, education director for NFMT. “It’s clear that business continuity planning is becoming more recognized as a crucial component in any facility operation. We’re thrilled to be offering this exceptional learning opportunity to our attendees in 2008.”
Dietzler adds that this year’s Disaster Experience will feature an entirely new scenario, allowing previous attendees to return to the exercise to gain additional insight into business continuity planning.
In addition to this event, NFMT will feature additional safety- and security-based programming as part of the SafeBuildings Expo, a co-located conference and exhibit debuting at this year’s event. Sessions include:
Fire Protection Technologies and Codes for the Mission Critical Facility. This session will educate facility executives, building owners and consultants about detection, control and extinguishing technologies and national fire codes specific to mission critical facilities, such as data centers.
Developing and Implementing a Solid Emergency Plan. What is the facility executive’s role in dealing effectively with property managers and property owners during an emergency? This presentation will review the steps needed in developing and implementing an emergency plan and coordinating that plan with property owners and property management.
The Evolution of Access Control: Smart Cards. The use of smart ID badges involves a wave of changes in security infrastructure, from how buildings are wired and how access control systems manage advanced data elements controlling access, to how human resources and personnel databases talk to each other to maintain access rights and adapt to include multiple locations. This panel will explain the new smart card-based access control evolution and discuss real companies and government agencies that have implemented these systems.
