The Farleigh Dickinson men’s basketball team made headlines last spring for being only the second No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They beat Purdue 63-58 last March. Recently, however, the Knights made headlines for a slightly more ignominious reason.
Before a February 15 tip-off against Long Island University, the team got stuck in an elevator at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn for about 15 minutes. The game officials gave the team extra time to warm up after they were rescued by the New York City Fire Department, according to CNN. The start of the game was delayed 17 minutes.
A tweet from a New York City reporter shows video of the team climbing out of the elevator, one by one.
The team recovered from the incident and won the game 84-82 in overtime. Perhaps getting stuck in an elevator is a good luck charm. Last March, the University of Miami basketball team got stuck in an elevator for about 30 minutes, and once rescued, went on to upset Houston in an NCAA tournament game.
