Nearly One-Third of School Districts use Portable Buildings
Statistical survey shows nearly half of current school buildings have undergone renovations March 8, 2024

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) last month released a report on the state of facilities in K-12 public schools, revealing some interesting information about their current conditions.
The study provided insights into the state of public education, with a good share of the report focused on facilities. Some of the more interesting findings:
- 31 percent of schools have one or more portable buildings in use.
- The average age of the main instructional buildings is 49 years old. Of those buildings, 38 percent of the buildings were built pre-1970.
- 47 percent of the main instructional buildings have undergone a major renovation since it was built, with 29 percent reporting a renovation since 2010.
- 46 percent reported they have had a major building replacement or addition since the school was built, with 26 percent occurring since 2010.
- 21 percent of all public schools since December 2023 reported having major repair, renovation or modernization work currently being performed at their school.
- 39 percent of public schools have an indoor air quality coordinator at their school to monitor air quality conditions and report issues and complaints.
NCES collected data between December 7 and December 23 from 1,625 participating public K-12 schools including every state and the District of Columbia.
