Blatimore-based Morgan State University announced that it will build a wall and station security personnel at entrances and exits after a shooting left five people injured, NBC News reports

The wall will reportedly extend existing barriers by 8,000 feet, encircling 90 percent of the campus with the potential to “eliminate unfettered access,” university President David Wilson said during a campus town hall.

During the town hall, campus officials were asked by students and staff on how the university could have better prevented the shooting. According to NBC News, the day of the shooting, students were walking from an auditorium to the campus student center when the gunfire began. Initially, students were told to shelter-in-place while campus was placed on lockdown due to police believe there was an active shooter threat. Five people were injured in the shooting, and all were released from local hospitals last week. At the time of publication, there has been no arrests.

According to NBC News, university officials said that security upgrades were already underway before the shooting but are now being expedited. Along with the wall, other security upgrades include installing metal detectors in campus buildings, exploring weapons detection technology, increasing police patrols and building additional security guard booths. The total cost of the upgrades is expected to reach more than $22 million.
