Human remains were found at a school in Milwaukee when construction crews were working on a project, Wisconsin Public Radio reported.
The remains were found at the site on Oct. 2 at Maryland Avenue Montessori and were later confirmed by Milwaukee police as part of a historical burial ground as confirmed by the Milwaukee County Historical Society. The remains were then turned over to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s office.
The medical examiner’s report says, “multiple bones were found by excavators while digging behind a school,” according to the radio report. Bones were reportedly located about 3 feet underground and were described as a large amount.
Human remains have twice before been found at the school, which was built in 1887. The previous times were in 1950 and 2021 and believed to be from people who died during cholera outbreaks. The site was previously an isolation hospital before becoming a school.
