School Fined for Underground Tank Leaks

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has fined Newton Country Day School $33,000 for failure to complete the clean up of oil-contaminated soil and groundwater. Leaking underground storage tanks turned up at the school during removal activities in 2000. About 91 tons of soil were removed and recycled under a plan the state approved in 2000, but school officials failed to provide information showing they had finished cleanup.

The state and school have agreed to new deadlines and school officials must prove they have finished the cleanup or face additional penalties. The state will suspend $13,000 of the penalty if the site complies by Dec. 4, 2007.
