Reports Target Facilities’ Role in Higher Education



A distinct relationship exists between student satisfaction, choice of institution, and the condition of facilities, according to one of two new reports released by APPA, the association serving educational facilities professionals.




A distinct relationship exists between student satisfaction, choice of institution, and the condition of facilities, according to one of two new reports released by APPA, the association serving educational facilities professionals.

"The Impact of Facilities on the Recruitment and Retention of Students: Final Report" uses data from more than 16,000 college students from 46 institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

The study updates a study done in the 1980s by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, in which 62 percent of students surveyed indicated the factor that most influenced them during their campus visit was the appearance of a college's grounds and buildings.

The report is available at www.appa.org/applications/publications. The cost is $29 for APPA members and $60 for non-members.

The second report, "University Facilities Respond to the Changing Landscape of Higher Education," identifies seven trends affecting higher education's future and relates these trends to the top 10 issues affecting facilities professionals.

Published by APPA's Center for Facilities Research, the report details the Thought Leaders' insight and vision on the future of higher education in regard to the stewardship of campus buildings and infrastructures.

Trends outlined in the report include the demand for innovation within a traditional framework and changing stakeholder expectations and technology.

Three of the top 10 critical facilities issues examined are:
* performance measurement and accountability
* developing the laboratory and classroom of the future
* facility reinvestment and total cost of ownership.
