Loss of Master Key Costs College More Than $500,000

Facilities maintenance managers can learn from the costly lesson that the College of William and Mary learned recently: Always have backup master keys handy.
The college is currently undergoing a lock re-core project on all but one of its residence halls after a lost set of master keys was never recovered. The price tag for the project: More than $500,000.
The replacement project affects 3,000 cores in residence halls, including student rooms and exterior residence hall doors. Replacing the cores will cost the college almost $400,000. To avoid a similar issue in the future, 20 electronically-controlled master key storage boxes will be installed, at a cost of more than $160,000, bringing the total project up to more than $560,000.
Adding to the woes, the project was unable to see completion during winter break to minimize disruption to students, so the project continues this month.
