Need a hospital room?

If so, now you can actually buy one. Amazon.com is selling so-called MedModular units for $814 a square foot, according to CNBC. The design is customizable, but all the rooms come with a bathroom and a bed. The cost about $285,000 each.

"We're targeting hospitals and health systems," says Grant Geiger, CEO of EIR Healthcare. "There's a trend towards bringing more transparency in the healthcare space.”

EIR is seeing increased interest from hospitals in using the units for things like simulation labs and urgent-care facilities. The company also has considered looking to the military for potential customers.

Healthcare facilities are a natural place to start, Geiger says, because Amazon already is selling medical supplies ranging from bed pans to syringes.

Previously, large hospital systems would buy everything through group purchasing organizations, which offered discounts but also a lacked transparency around costs, according to the article.
