The arrival of spring has brought the annual surge in construction projects, along with grim reminders of the potential threats that complex construction projects pose for workers. Only last month, a construction mishap last month on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh killed one person. Now tragedy has struck another major campus.
The investigation continues into the death of a construction worker killed on the University of Georgia campus recently, according to WGAU. University police say the worker, employed by IMI Construction, was hit by a piece of machinery while working on a steam line between the university’s Miller Learning Center and the Tate Student Center. The victim has been identified as Trevor Wilkie,36.
Just before 10 a.m. on Friday, university police officials say the man was working on a steam line project on campus when he was accidentally hit by some construction equipment. University police, Athens-Clarke County Fire and EMS and National EMS responded to treat the worker. He was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
It is unclear what led up to him being hit by one of the machines or if anyone might face charges.
