California City Converting Airfield Into a Cultural Complex

The City of Irvine, California, is converting a former military airfield into a cultural complex, with projected completion scheduled for 2023.

The Cultural Terrace will be built on a 110-acre parcel that was formerly the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. The property includes two 140,000 square foot hangars and a 40,000 square foot warehouse.

Design team IBI Group says the terrace will include a museum complex, library, event space, community center and city offices. Multi-purpose outdoor spaces will also be designed to connect the buildings on the property.

“This site has an important history in Orange County and now is ready to be transformed into a dynamic public space for Irvine in the 21st century,” says landscape architect Chris Torres of Agency Artifact.

The space will be designed as a carbon-neutral site that contributes to Irvine’s ACHIEVES resolution under the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, focusing on sustainable infrastructure and energy use savings.
