Pittsburgh Airport Breaks Ground on New Terminal
October 25, 2021
Pittsburgh National Airport’s new terminal broke ground recently, offering facility managers a glimpse of how new construction in the post- (or current-) pandemic world might look like.
Airport features will include lots of space for social distancing, outdoor spaces, and increased clean air technology. The projected cost of the terminal is $1.4 billion, with completion scheduled for 2025.
Officials are touting the 700,000-square-foot terminal as the first terminal in the country to be built in the post-pandemic world. The terminal will include 90,000 square feet of outdoor terrace space both pre- and post-security to provide passengers and employees more access to fresh air.
Officials say the new terminal will consolidate operations such as ticketing, security, and baggage claim with a goal of reducing travel time for customers by 50 percent from curb to airside. The terminal will also include a 3,300-space parking garage that will include rental car facilities.
