While colleges and universities continue to undertake new construction projects to expand their academic offerings, reach and appeal, one university is shining spotlight onto the much-overlooked process of building renovation.
Officials of the state of Arizona and the University of Arizona met on the university campus recently to kick off the first renovation project under a $1 billion higher education investment bond package, according to an article in the Arizona Daily Star. The Veterinary Sciences and Microbiology Building 90 is more than 50 years old and is the first building to undergo renovations using money from the bond program.
The renovations include removing asbestos and replacing the mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems, none of which have been updated since the building’s construction. The funding for this renovation project came from a new law that allows for the state’s public universities to sell up to $1 billion in bonds for infrastructure improvements.
